Hello
My name is Justin Gastrich and I completed my B.S. in Mechanical Engineering in 2006. I started On1Design in 2019 after a decade and a half working in manufacturing engineering roles at several automotive/supplier companies. Within these positions I always gravitated to the equipment design and was able to create many interesting machines along the way. In 2019 I pursued my Professional Engineer License in Mechanical Machine Design and Materials, and was issued license number 39959 here in the state of California. That same year I also received an AWS Weld Certification (4G GMAW), to back up my 20 years of fabrication experience. I have a life-long passion for design and fabrication of mechanical systems, and On1Design serves as a perfect outlet for such endeavors.
On1Moto - A passion project.
Even in my downtime I can't help but engineer and fabricate.
On1Moto, like so many inventions, was born out of necessity. While living in the storage space-constrained Bay Area, I went on a quest for "The most minimal device for towing a dirt bike". I never cared for the fact hitch-haulers blocked access to the rear hatch (not ideal for camping), and their negative impact on vehicle handling due to the cantilevered weight.
After realizing the downsides of just towing with the rear wheel of the moto on the road (triple clamps bind when car steers, need for swapping rear wheel and removing chain, and dubious legality...), I researched the variety of options out there (Trailer In a Bag, etc.) and came to the conclusion that there was largely a gap in the available options between the 50-lb hitch hauler, and typical 300-lb channel-type moto trailer.
So with some SolidWorks, strain gauges, and a welder I designed, built, and tested a NATM/NHTSA/DOT-compliant moto towing solution. The design was awarded US Patent No. 10,933,791. I have towed On1Moto all over the western US, racking up many thousand of miles and spurring plenty of conversations that usually begin with "I've never seen something like that!".
From concept, to design, to fabrication, I love what I do - what can I do for you?
Best regards,
Justin Gastrich P.E.
